Breaking Health News

One third of all children and teens have taken supplements that they don’t need according to a study from the Univerisity of California School of Medicine.  Kids with higher income took more pills than those with lower incomes in this study.  There is a danger to unregulated over the counter pills, or at least some feel.  Some children develop liver issues, abdominal pain, etc. from excessive pills.

One wonders if those children who take no pills are often the ones with chronic diseases later in life from mineral and vitamin imbalances.  I think so.

A study found that 500 preschoolers spent 56% of their day doing sedentary tasks.  Kids need lots of exercise when they are young.  Has life changed that much?

{February 6, 2010}   A Great Book

A great book that I found in my bookcase was Little Things Long Remembered by Newman, published by Crown Publishers in NY. It’s a book on making your children feel special every day. This author has written some great books. She has the Cardinal Rules of being a parent. The book is filled with great ideas of things to do with your children.  Our children grow up so fast.  We need to make the most of everyday and moment.  This book will help you to make moments memoriable for you and your children, believe me.

{December 31, 2009}   Autism and The Rain

Cornell University scientists found that 30 percent of autism cases were found in California, Oregon and Washington.  They think the reason is due to the rainy areas and times.  Children spent more time indoors around household chemicals and get less vitamin D from the sunlight. There is no direct evidence to this, but it is a thought.

It is really sick that people in this world of ours can sell human beings like cattle into slavery or to brothels. This occurs in many countries and is the fastest growing trade next to illegal drugs. Treating girls and women like 2nd class children needs to end in our country and other parts of the world.

There are many things you can do as a family to enjoy life more together.

-Clean up a local park.

-Collect books for theUnited Way Big Red Book Shelf Project in Duluth.

-Help serve a meal at a local soup kitchen ( ie. Union Gospel Mission).

-Collect clothing for a homeless shelter (ie. Damino, Chum)

-Read to younger children.

-Get your family interested in recyling.

-Make something for a neighbor.

-Bring flowers to someone in the hospital.

-Participate in a walk, where you can see where the money goes, and there is real transparency.

Stephen Covey is a well known best selling author. He was writen many great books, and has lots of important advice on raising children.

-TV is a time to discuss programs with your children, so that it’s a learning experience.

-Computers are used for homework in his family, not for fun and games.  Kids are not glued to the computers.

-Books are really important to children. and they make great gifts.  “A love of reading” is so important to children, and I think it is the greatest gift you can give your children.

-Children need to say ” no” to excessive amounts of activities that cause them stress. We are need to eliminate the fast paced life we are living.  Exercise as a family, enjoy nature, and quality time with family and friends.

-Parents need to affim children’s worth and potential. Let your children know they are a very important child or  person.

-Covey tells how every family should have a mission statement to the four parts of their life-mind, body, heart and spirit. Serving others is really a learning experience for children, and we need to take care of the four parts of our life.

-Grades are important, and children should work to do their best. Doing your best helps you to do better in life. We don’t want our children to grow up and be slackers.

-Homework is important.  Have your children teach you what they learned in school, and show them that you care about their progress.

-Don’t ever compare one child to another. Love your children unconditionally. Character and contribution is important to a family.
